Mirabai Chanu is an Indian Weightlifting woman. Mirabai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 at Nongpok Kakching, Imphal East, Manipur, India. She was very famous for weightlifting. At the age of 11, she won first gold medal in local weightlifting competition. She won a Silver medal at 2020 Tokyo Olympics in women’s 49 kg, thereby bringing India its first medal in the event. Some Unknown Facts of Mirabai Chanu
- Mirabai started her career at very early stage and won her first medal at the age of 11 in local competition. Her ideal is Kunjarani Devi.
- Her professional weightlifting journey began in 2011 when she participated at International Youth Championship at South Asian Junior Games. She won Gold medal in these Games.
- In 2014, she represented India in Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She won Silver medal in the Games.
- Mirabai was also part of Rio Olympics 2016 but she could not bring result and scored No Valid Result as Mirbai didn’t register a total after failing all three of her Clean and Jerk attempts
- On 31 Aug 2015, Mirabai was appointed Sr Ticket Collector, under Lumiding Division/ Northeast Frontier Railways.
- Mirabai was also part of Rio Olympics 2016 but she could not bring result and scored No Valid Result as Mirbai didn’t register a total after failing all three of her Clean and Jerk attempts.
- In Apr 2018, she was designated as OSD(Sports) under Principal Chief Personnel Officer (PCPO), NFR.
- Mirabai was awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2018.
- She was also awarded Padma Shri in 2018
- After winning Silver medal in Tokyo Olympic in 2021, Mirabai was appointed as Additional Supritendent of Police(Sports).
- She also received ?2 Crore from Ministry of Railways ?1 Crore from Manipur government, ?50 Lakhs from Centre government and ?40 Lakhs from IOA for winning Silver medal in Tokyo Olympics.
- One night before her final medal round in Tokyo Olympic, she encountered mensentural cramps in the lower abdomen which was unexpected. She was tensed and raised doubt about her focus. But she changed her plans. In an interview, Mirabai added ” As athletes, we face such problems often and we know how to handle them”. Later her chief national coach Vijay Sharma said “We were always targeting gold but this whole issue resulted in Mirabai’s performance taking a hit during final. She missed two lifts which she should have completed. We could have given the Chines lifeter(Gold medal winner) a better fight.
