Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s longest-serving Prime Minister, was born on September 28, 1947, in Tungipara, East Bengal, to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding father, and Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib. She earned a degree in Bengali literature from Dhaka University in 1973 and later married M.A. Wazed Miah, a nuclear scientist, in 1968. The couple has two children, Sajeeb and Saima.
Hasina’s entry into politics was marked by tragedy. Her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was assassinated in a military coup in 1975, along with most of her family members. She was in Europe at the time and later took asylum in India. Hasina returned to Bangladesh in 1981 and became the President of the Awami League, a position she still holds.
Hasina’s political career began in the 1980s, when she joined forces with Khaleda Zia, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to oust military ruler Hossain Mohammad Ershad. She became Prime Minister for the first time in 1996, serving until 2001. During her tenure, she signed the 30-year water-sharing treaty with India governing the Ganges.
Hasina returned to power in 2009 and went on to serve four more terms, making her Bangladesh’s longest-serving Prime Minister. Her tenure was marked by significant economic growth, but also criticized for human rights abuses, suppression of dissent, and corruption allegations.
In 2024, Hasina’s government was marred by violent protests and allegations of human rights abuses. She resigned and fled to India, where she currently resides in exile. In November 2025, she was sentenced to death in absentia for her role in the 2024 student-led uprising.
Throughout her career, Hasina has been recognized for her efforts to promote democracy and women’s empowerment in Bangladesh. Despite controversies, she remains a dominant figure in Bangladeshi politics.
