In 1945, KC Mahindra, JC Mahindra, and Ghulam Mohammed together started the company under the name Mahindra & Mohammad (M&M). However, after the partition of the country, Ghulam Mohammed moved to Pakistan and became its first finance minister. The foundation of the company as we see it today was laid by Anand Mahindra’s grandfather, Kailash Chandra Mahindra. But you would be surprised to know that initially, this company did not manufacture vehicles.
Mahindra and Mahindra has a deep connection with Ghulam Mohammad. This is the same Ghulam Mohammad who went to Pakistan after independence and became the first Finance Minister there. He completed his graduation from Aligarh. Mahindra and Mahindra was founded on 02 Oct 1945, in Ludhiana, Punjab.
Initially, there were three partners in this company – K.C. Mahindra, J.C. Mahindra, and Ghulam Mohammad. Although Ghulam Mohammad had a smaller stake in the company, his name was still included. At that time, the company was called Mahindra & Mohammad and was involved in the steel business.
When the country got independence, Ghulam Muhammad moved to Pakistan. After this, the Mahindra brothers decided to take the company forward. However, the company’s name remained the same in English, i.e., M&M, but it was changed to Mahindra & Mahindra.
There was an interesting reason behind changing the name. In fact, a significant amount of stationery had already been printed with the name M&M. If the name were to change, the company would incur substantial losses. Therefore, the Mahindra brothers decided to keep the name as M&M (Mahindra & Mahindra) and later ventured into the automobile industry.
Mahindra was the first to make a Jeep. The idea was conceived by KC Mahindra. While he was working in America, he envisioned such vehicles and decided to bring them to India. After that, the company began manufacturing tractors and commercial vehicles. Today, Mahindra has established its presence with many vehicles both in the country and around the world. Recently, the company launched two electric vehicles that are becoming quite popular in the EV market.
