At Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, 14.2 kilograms of gold bars worth an estimated ?12.56 crores were seized from Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who is the stepdaughter of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Ramachandra Rao. In total, items valued at ?17.29 crores were confiscated, including other belongings worth ?4.73 crores. The investigation revealed that she was part of a gold smuggling network and charged a hefty commission for smuggling goods from Dubai to Bengaluru. Gold Carrying Limit
There is no set limit on carrying gold on domestic flights (within India), but if you have a significant amount of gold, security checks (CISF) and the Income Tax Department may inquire about its source. If you are traveling with more than 500 grams of gold, you must have a proper purchase bill. Without a bill for excess gold, the Income Tax authorities can confiscate the gold and impose a fine.
Strict rules apply to carrying gold while traveling abroad. If you are leaving India for another country, different countries have their own regulations, so you should check the customs (Customs) rules of that country.
When returning to India from abroad, the following limits apply for carrying Gold:
Male passengers can bring gold worth up to ?50,000 (in different jewelry). Female passengers can bring gold worth up to ?1,00,000 (in different jewelry). Children under 12 years can bring gold worth up to ?25,000. If the gold exceeds these limits, customs duty (Custom Duty) will have to be paid. Apart from gold jewelry, if you bring gold biscuits or bars, higher duties will apply.
If you travel with gold exceeding the prescribed limits, the Customs Department, Income Tax Department, and security agencies may interrogate you at the airport. If you carry excess gold without a bill, the Income Tax Department can confiscate it. If you carry excess Gold without disclosure, the Income Tax Department may consider it illegal smuggling and impose a fine. For bringing excess Gold from abroad, customs duty of up to 36% will have to be paid. Smuggling excess gold can lead to fines and imprisonment.
