Ajit Doval is a seasoned Indian bureaucrat and former spymaster who has been serving as the National Security Advisor (NSA) since 2014. Born on January 20, 1945, in Ghiri Banelsyun village, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, Doval has had a storied career spanning over five decades.
Doval’s early life was marked by his father’s military service, instilling in him a sense of patriotism and duty.
He was schooled at the prestigious Ajmer Military School in Rajasthan and later pursued a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Agra.
Doval joined the IPS in 1968 and was assigned to the Kerala cadre. He quickly rose through the ranks, dealing with insurgency and terrorism in regions like Mizoram and Punjab.
Doval’s work in the IB earned him recognition, particularly for his role in Operation Black Thunder in 1988, where he infiltrated the Golden Temple disguised as a rickshaw-puller to gather intelligence on Khalistani separatists.
As NSA, Doval has been instrumental in shaping India’s national security policy, including the “Defensive Offensive” strategy. He played a key role in the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot airstrike.
In 1988, Doval’s intelligence work(Operation Black Thunder) helped defuse the siege and saved countless lives.
In 1999, Doval was a key negotiator who played a major role in securing the release of passengers held hostage by terrorists during IC-814 Hijacking.
In 2016, Doval’s careful planning and intelligence work made the operation successful(Surgical Strikes).
Alsp, Doval’s strategic planning and execution were instrumental in the airstrike(Balakot Airstrikez) in 2019.
Doval is known to be a private person, with his family life remaining largely out of the public eye. He is married to Anu Doval and has two sons, Vivek and Shaurya Doval. Shaurya is an Indian diplomat, while Vivek is a chartered financial analyst.
